What’s a Rheumatologist?
A rheumatologist is a doctor with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis, and other conditions that cause inflammation and pain in your joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, and muscles.
When to See a Specialist
Talk to your primary care provider if you have any of the following symptoms:

- Joint redness
- Inflammation, swelling, or stiffness
Your primary care doctor can treat most of these problems but may refer you to rheumatologist if your symptoms are severe.

Diagnostic Tests
To diagnose the cause of your symptoms, your provider may use tests like:
- Bone density test – Measures bone strength
- Blood tests – Take a sample of your blood for examination in a lab
- Ultrasound imaging – Uses sound waves to take pictures of the inside of your body
- X-ray – Uses electromagnetic waves to take pictures of the inside of your body
