What's a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC)?
A doctor of chiropractic (DC) is commonly called a chiropractor. A chiropractor is a health care professional with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with an emphasis on treatment through manual adjustment and/or manipulation of the spine.
When to See a Chiropractor
Turn to a chiropractor when you have neuromuscular (nerve, muscle, bone, and joint) pain. Chiropractic treatments can help restore motion, ease pain, reduce muscle tightness, and heal tissue. You should see a chiropractor if you have:
- Headaches
- Lower back pain or sciatica
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
Your Spine Health
When you have an injury or painful condition involving your nerves, muscles, bones, or joints, you may feel discomfort throughout your body. Your chiropractor may perform spinal adjustments to correct spine misalignments and:
- Reduce subluxation (out-of-position bones in your spine)
- Release joint pressure
- Restore proper nerve function
- Help your body heal
Chiropractic Services
At your first appointment, your chiropractor will review your health history, perform a physical exam, and may order X-rays and lab tests. They will use this information to evaluate your condition and create a personalized treatment plan which may include:
- Chiropractic adjustment – Applies precise, hands-on force to a specific part of your spine
- Electric muscle stimulation – Causes muscle contraction to increase circulation and range of motion
- Massage – Kneads your soft tissue to improve circulation and reduce swelling
- Ultrasound therapy – Uses sound waves to heat injured tissue, muscles or joints and reduce pain and promote healing
