What’s a Physiatrist?
A physiatrist, also known as a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctor (PM&R), is a physician with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect a patient’s ability to move. These conditions may involve the brain, nerves, bones, joints, muscles, and tendons. Physiatrists use non-surgical treatments and work with surgeons when needed.

What to Expect
During your first visit, your PM&R doctor will do a comprehensive evaluation that will include:
- Talking about your symptoms and how they affect your life
- Discussing your goals
- Having a physical examination
- Doing simple tests to check your ability to move
After your evaluation, your physiatrist will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that may include:
- Adaptive equipment, including mobility aids
- Exercise programs
- Manual therapies
- Medicine
- Orthotics or prosthetics
Team-Based Care
