Nicole Baldwin, MD

Nicole Baldwin, MD, is a neurologist at Essentia Health in Duluth, Minnesota, where she specializes in neuroimmunology, which is the study of how the immune system interacts with the brain and spinal cord. Growing up in Hibbing, MN, on the Iron Range, Dr. Baldwin witnessed firsthand the challenges rural communities face in accessing neurological care. Her deep connection to the region and desire to give back inspired her to return and serve the area she calls home. 

Dr. Baldwin’s journey with Essentia Health began early. She shadowed the neurology team during her undergraduate studies and completed a neurology rotation there in medical school. These experiences solidified her passion for practicing neurology in a rural setting. She chose neurology because it combines her love of solving puzzles with her desire to connect deeply with patients. Dr. Baldwin believes that understanding a patient’s story is key to providing the best care, especially when helping individuals navigate life-changing neurological conditions. 

Her subspecialty in neuroimmunology focuses on conditions like multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune disorders of the brain and spinal cord. She also has a special interest in post-infectious neurological disorders, including the effects of COVID-19, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, HIV, and syphilis. Dr. Baldwin speaks intermediate Spanish, a skill she developed during her training in Miami, and enjoys teaching neurology globally in limited-resource settings. 

Outside of work, Dr. Baldwin loves canoeing, hiking, church and traveling. She feels privileged to support her patients and their families as they face neurological challenges together.
