Dr. Kevin Riess, MD FACS is a general surgeon at Essentia Health. He is the Arrowhead Division Chair of surgical specialties and Chief of Surgery. He joined Essentia in 2008.
Dr. Kevin Riess earned a Bachelor of Arts with high honors both in chemistry and biochemistry at St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. He received his medical degree with high honors from the University of Minnesota. Subsequently, he completed his surgery residency at Gunderson Lutheran in La Crosse, WI.
He is an active member in the American College of Surgeons. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota and teaches both U of MN medical students and general surgery residents.
Dr. Riess’s surgery interests are intraabdominal surgery, colorectal surgery, GERD treatment, hernia repair, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, varicose veins, dialysis access, breast cancer, skin cancer including melanoma, colonoscopy, acute care surgery, and trauma.
His hobbies include computer programming, electrical engineering, cabinetry and woodworking, teaching, hiking, playing guitar, gardening, downhill and cross-country skiing, and community leadership.
