Smoking Cessation Benefits
Smoking harms your health and raises your risk for many conditions, including certain types of cancer and breathing problems. Your body benefits minutes after you quit.
- 20 minutes after quitting: Your blood pressure improves and the temperature of your hands and feet goes back to normal.
- Eight hours after quitting: The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
- Two weeks to three months after quitting: Blood circulation improves and your lung function increases up to 30 percent.
- One year after quitting: Your risk for heart disease may be half that of a smoker.
- Five to 15 years after quitting: Your stroke risk is close to that of a nonsmoker.
- Ten years after quitting: The risk for cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas goes down.
How Much Money Will You Save?
Smoking doesn’t just cost you your health. The average price of a pack of cigarettes is $7.50. That means, if you currently smoke a pack a day, when you stop buying cigarettes you’ll save $225 each month. In a year, you’ll have an extra $2,737.50, and in five years, you’ll have saved $13,687.50.
