What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?
PRP is a type of regenerative medicine that can relieve chronic muscle, joint, or spine pain—and may prevent the need for surgery. It has less risks than other procedures and takes about two hours.
During PRP, we take a small sample of your blood and use a device to separate your platelets from the rest of your blood. Then, your pain medicine doctor injects your platelets into the part of your body where you have pain, using ultrasound guidance to target the injection. Platelets are used naturally by your body to heal.
Ultrasound Guidance
Ultrasound guidance allows your doctor to use ultrasound to see the problem area and precisely target pain. This takes out the guesswork and can help make treatment more effective.
Who Can Benefit from PRP?
If you have pain or pain from injuries where conservative treatment, such as physical therapy, hasn't worked, PRP may be for you. Our doctor can use PRP to help:
- Knee arthritis (mild to moderate)
- Pain from Achilles tendon
- Greater trochanteric bursitis – a type of hip pain
- Golfer’s elbow
- Tennis elbow
Does Insurance Cover PRP?
Insurance providers typically don’t cover PRP, but Essentia offers the service at a competitive rate.
