Diabetes Education

Our Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) are nurses and dietitians who have specialized training and are certified in the management of diabetes.

Learn how to live well with diabetes. You'll meet with a CDE to learn how diabetes affects your body and figure out what you can do to manage your health. We'll help you set small, achievable goals so you find success and feel better. Count on us to:

• Discuss ways you can use physical activity to manage your diabetes
• Explain how medications work
• Help you reduce risk of diabetes-related health problems
• Help you select glucose monitoring devices
• Offer tips on coping with stress and other challenges
• Suggest tools that help you follow your plan
• Work with you to plan meals and snacks that fit your needs, tastes, and budget

Work with your care team to decide how often to meet with a CDE.

Insulin pumps help regulate your blood sugar levels by delivering insulin—usually through a small, flexible tube inserted under your skin. If you’re considering using an insulin pump, a CDE or certified pump trainer (CPT) at Essentia can:

• Teach you about different types of insulin pumps and how they work
• Help you choose the right pump for you
• Show you how to use your insulin pump

In Central Minnesota, you may have the option to get diabetes education in a group setting. You’ll attend a series of five classes over about two months. Learn how to manage your diabetes and connect with others who are facing similar challenges. Group classes are designed for people with type 2 diabetes who do not use insulin. Ask your care team for more information.

Many insurance plans, including Medicare, cover up to 10 hours of diabetes education during your first year. After your first year, you may have coverage for annual or twice-yearly follow-up appointments. Check with your insurance provider to find out what’s covered.No text in field
