Who Will I See?
Your primary care provider can help you decide which type of mental health professional to see. You’ll likely work with either a psychologist or licensed clinical social worker. Both types of providers have advanced degrees and offer psychotherapy, or talk therapy. Neither can prescribe medications.
You’ll achieve the best results when you work with a therapist you’re comfortable with. If you don’t feel like your therapist is a good fit, ask your primary care provider for a referral to a different provider.
Your First Appointment
During your first meeting your therapist will start by getting to know you. You’ll talk about your current problems or concerns. You may also be asked to share a bit about your personal and family history so your therapist can understand your background.
Your therapist will work with you to create a personalized care plan that will include your goals and strategies for how best to reach them. You may talk about types of therapy and how often to see your counselor. If you and your therapist believe you’d benefit from medication, you will be referred to a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner.
