To receive a badge, adult visitors will need to present one form of photo identification, such as a driver’s license or passport. Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital
Get specialized pediatric hospital care right in Duluth, Minnesota. You’ll find Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in St. Mary’s Medical Center which is a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. Our pediatric emergency room is on the 1st floor of the hospital next to the adult emergency room. We also offer a pediatric inpatient unit and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) on the hospital’s 8th floor. On the 5th floor, we also have a newborn intensive care unit (NICU).
Inpatient Vs. Outpatient Hospital Services
If you have a test or procedure performed at a hospital but are not admitted, you’re an outpatient. Common outpatient procedures may include X-rays, labs, and emergency room visits. If your doctor admits you to the hospital for an overnight stay, you’re typically an inpatient.One exception to this is if your doctor places you on observation status. Emergency Care Fast Track
Get quick and efficient treatment for minor medical concerns when you can't see your regular doctor or go to an urgent care. The Fast Track is a section of the ER that handles less-severe medical cases to reduce wait times. Each private room has a reclining chair, rather than a bed or exam table, for added comfort.
Comprehensive Critical Care
Rest easier knowing critical care is nearby. St. Mary’s Medical Center has six distinct intensive care units (ICUs), from a cardiac ICU to a neuro trauma ICU. Each ICU has medical teams trained to provide 24-hour critical care for specific types of injuries and illnesses.

St. Mary’s Birthing Center is here to support you throughout your birthing experience. We do our best to follow your birth plan while keeping you and your baby as safe and comfortable as possible. Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center Auxiliary
The St. Mary's Medical Center Auxiliary is one of the fundraising arms of the hospital. Besides running the gift shop, the Auxiliary holds a wide range of fundraising events. All proceeds benefit our patients, families, visitors, and staff. They also offer scholarships to area college students pursuing careers in health care.
Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center owes much to its pioneers. After more than 125 years, we’re seeing patients from across northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
History Timeline
1881 | Benedictine Sisters, who later founded the Monastery of St. Scholastica, arrive in Duluth.
1888 | St. Mary’s Hospital is established at 20th Avenue West and 3rd Street in Duluth’s West End neighborhood by a small group of Benedictine Sisters.
1892 | The Duluth Community of Benedictine Sisters is founded—committed to establishing a health care ministry in Duluth.
1911 | A larger St. Mary’s Hospital building opens at 404 East 3rd Street.
1997 | St. Mary’s merges with Duluth Clinic to form the SMDC Health System.
2004 | Essentia Health is formed as the parent corporation of the SMDC and Benedictine health systems.
2010 | Essentia fully integrates its health systems to create efficiencies and reduce health care costs. St. Mary’s Medical Center becomes Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center.Today, Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center is one of northern Minnesota’s largest and most specialized medical centers. Through the leadership and sponsorship of the St. Scholastica Monastery, St. Mary’s Medical Center continues to carry on the spirit of the Duluth Benedictines.
