Essentia Health-Duluth Auxiliary
The Essentia Health-Duluth Auxiliary is one of the fundraising arms of the facility. Besides running the gift shop, the Auxiliary holds a wide range of fundraising events. All proceeds benefit our patients, families, visitors, and staff. They also offer scholarships to area college students pursuing careers in health care.
Essentia Health-Duluth is what it is today thanks to gifts from individuals, organizations, and businesses, including two generous donors who helped us open and expand.
History Timeline
1934 | The 50-bed Miller Memorial Hospital opens nearly two decades after Duluth businessman and Mayor Andreas M. Miller left money to the city of Duluth. The money was “for the establishment of a free and public hospital” for “the secular use and benefit of worthy sick and helpless poor, without distinction of sex, color, creed or nationality.” The day the hospital opens, Duluth Clinic doctors start treating patients.1968 | A gift from Mary C. Dwan funds a major expansion that includes a Burn Unit and 115 new beds. Renamed Miller-Dwan Medical Center, the hospital develops a regional reputation for outstanding services in rehabilitation, mental health, and outpatient surgical services.1997 | The Duluth Clinic integrates with St. Mary’s Medical Center, forming the SMDC Health System.2001 | The partnership between Duluth Clinic and Miller-Dwan Medical Center is made stronger when Miller-Dwan also becomes part of the SMDC Health System.2004 | Essentia Health is formed as the parent corporation of the SMDC and Benedictine health systems.2010 | Essentia fully integrates its health systems to create efficiencies and reduce health care costs. The SMDC Medical Center is renamed Essentia Health-Duluth.
